Diversity and Inclusion (D&I) is a term that has become wildly popular among major industries across the globe, but what does it really mean? Do D&I initiatives solely focus on equality regardless of race, gender, and sexual orientation – or do these efforts encompass something even larger?

At Axon, Diversity and Inclusion means raising the bar beyond acceptance: we embrace the differences within our global team. To us, it’s a cultural mindset that empowers us to recognize and appreciate the different characteristics that make us unique individuals. This can refer to education, religion, hobbies, personal interests, skill sets or something more personal and complex - such as personality types (i.e. introverted/extroverted).

To assist in cultivating a robust climate of inclusion, Axon has established a committee with the sole focus on enhancing our efforts in this area. Axon’s D&I Committee is passionate about the concept of individual fairness by embracing diversity and inclusion. Our mission statement says it all:

“At Axon, we know diversity is everywhere – it’s all of us. Our backgrounds. Our thinking. Our perspectives. We believe these differences make our team stronger. With a dedicated Diversity and Inclusion Committee evaluating and leading our ongoing efforts, we’re making sure diversity is embraced and protected”

In 2017, Axon focused on driving more emphasis on this important initiative by revamping the D&I Campaign on a global scale. Key committee accomplishments in 2017 included:

  • Improving Axon’s university recruitment diversity by 20%
  • Sending seven Axon employees to the Grace Hopper Celebration in Orlando, FL (three of which were guest speakers at the conference).
  • Revising Axon’s D&I Statement and publishing to our public platforms
  • Coordinating Key Awareness Trainings for our employees
  • Creating an internal communication channel dedicated to topics within the Diversity & Inclusion umbrella – a place for our employees to ask questions and receive updates

In addition, Axon’s first Diversity & Inclusion Survey was released to our employees around the world, asking for anonymous feedback on what’s important to them from a D&I perspective. The survey was considered a huge success due to the openly candid and honest observations submitted by members of the Axon community. As a result of the survey, the D&I Committee has put together a strong set of new initiatives and programs to launch in 2018. We’ll use this blog as a launch pad for highlighting our work throughout the year – so stay tuned to learn more about our big 2018 plans!
