Security Advice from Axon's SVP of Information Security
Our “Security Minded” blog series is updated every week with need-to-know information about our commitment to keeping the data in Evidence.com safe. In this fourth video installment, Jenner Holden, SVP of Information Security at Axon, offers advice on how to keep agencies secure.
In a world full of cyber threats, keeping your agency secure can seem like a daunting task. Fear not. There are plenty of small steps you can take to help protect your agency.
One of the easiest and best ways to keep your agency secure is by following proper password practices. We all know someone – or we may be that someone – who uses the same password for every site. Help your team feel comfortable using different, more challenging passwords with password management software – a tool that securely stores passwords so you don’t have to worry about forgetting them.
Speaking of challenging passwords, don’t fall victim to common guidelines that suggest using eight characters for your password. A safer minimum is ten. And when you include symbols, stick to those located on the bottom right of your keyboard instead of the on the top left. Why? Hackers know symbols like the exclamation point are more commonly used than something like a bracket.
Thinking beyond passwords
Passwords may be the first step to better security, but they aren’t the only step. Think about your access controls. Can everyone in your agency access every document? Or do individuals only have permission to access what they need?
Someone working in admin may not need access to body camera footage. Similarly, an officer probably doesn’t need to see agency payroll documents. By limiting access and setting user management permissions, your agency will be on its way to better security.
It’s never too late to enhance your agency’s security. Start small with more challenging passwords and access controls. Continue to build on these simple steps and you’ll notice major improvements in the safety of your data.
