Now available: Faster, simpler MFA using your Axon body cameras

Thank You for Adopting MFA

We want to thank all the agencies we partner with for successfully transitioning to Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) following our "MFA is the Way" campaign. Since then, MFA has become a strict default requirement for all agencies using Axon Evidence, ensuring a robust layer of protection against unauthorized access.

While adopting MFA is a critical first step, staying secure means keeping up with evolving standards and best practices. Recently, the FBI’s Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) introduced updates to its Security Policy to help agencies use the most secure MFA methods available.

Understanding New CJIS MFA Guidance

As part of its ongoing efforts to strengthen security, the FBI’s Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) recently updated its Security Policy with stricter requirements for MFA methods.

The updated guidance highlights the importance of secure and reliable authentication methods, moving away from less secure options like email and SMS-based authentication. Instead, CJIS recommends alternatives such as:

  • Authenticator apps

  • Biometric authentication (e.g., fingerprint or facial recognition)

  • Hardware tokens

  • FIDO2-based passwordless authenticators

This change underscores the need for agencies to transition to more secure MFA options to comply with CJIS policy and ensure sensitive Criminal Justice Information (CJI) remains protected.

If your agency uses Axon managed accounts, you’re already supported with a range of compliant options, including a brand-new solution coming soon detailed below. For agencies using their own Single Sign-On (SSO) provider, we recommend working with your provider to ensure all methods align with the updated CJIS requirements.

Introducing MFA Codes Directly on Axon Body-Worn Cameras

We’re excited to announce a new MFA option that is not only compliant with CJIS guidance but also faster and easier than other available methods - perfect for officers using Axon body-worn cameras.

With BWC-based MFA:

  • There’s no need to open an app or wait for an SMS/email code: Simply look at the screen on your body camera.

  • It works offline: The feature works without LTE or Wi-Fi, ensuring reliability in any location.

  • It eliminates extra steps: No switching devices or juggling emails and SMS.

Here’s how it works:

  • Authenticate Using Your Camera: Select your body camera as the MFA method during login.

  • View Your Code: A 6-digit code will display on the camera’s screen.

  • Secure, Seamless Access: Enter the code to complete authentication.

This method was designed to simplify the authentication process, saving officers valuable time and effort while maintaining the highest level of security.

No Admin Configuration Needed

Admins, we’ve made this transition as simple as possible: no action is required on your part. This feature will automatically activate for eligible users. Officers will seamlessly experience this improvement without disruptions to their workflow.
