Voice of Community

Axon listens to a wide range of voices and perspectives from community representatives, industry experts, academics, policymakers, and civil rights organizations. Product teams use what they hear to build safeguards and guide how products are deployed.

Who makes up the Voice of Community

The Voice of Community is made up of three groups: our Responsible Innovation Team, the Ethics and Equity Advisory Council (EEAC), and national community organizations. Together, they bring independent expertise, community perspective, and lived experience into how we design and build products.

STEP BY STEP

How insights are produced:

  • Products are chosen based on their potential impact on communities, especially new products or markets, new use-of-force capabilities, or a meaningful expansion in scope, risk, or when adding AI into officer workflows.

What we review

Axon focuses on new products, features, or capabilities where community input can meaningfully shape design, safeguards, and deployment before launch.

Who’s affected

The product's purpose, who will use it, and which communities are most likely to be affected, including people who may experience its impact but never use it directly.

How it's used in the field

How the technology functions within real workflows: where human judgment is required, where decisions are made, and how the experience may shape community outcomes.

Risks

Privacy concerns, potential for unintended use, safety issues, and the chance of unequal impact across communities.

Safeguards

Product features, recommended policy guidelines, training, and oversight built in to prevent misuse and support accountability.

How it’s rolled out

How the product is introduced, including which customers and communities are involved early, what feedback channels are in place, and how early lessons shape the wider release.

Examples of questions we ask

  • Who could be harmed if this is misused?

  • What safeguards prevent unauthorized use?

  • How will we measure impact after launch?

  • Does this affect some communities more than others?

  • What privacy protections are in place?

  • How can affected communities provide input?

What we do not review

Voice of Community focuses on responsible innovation for new or high-impact products. The following areas are outside of our scope:

Routine product improvements

Minor feature updates or standard improvements to existing products.

Business strategy

Pricing models, market positioning, sales tactics, or competitive business decisions.

Individual customer setup

Customer specific configurations, workflows, or individual deployment decisions.

Legal or regulatory compliance

Interpreting laws, regulations, or legal liability.

Technical architecture

Engineering choices, infrastructure, or implementation details that are not essential to the product.
