Vancouver Police Department expands connected public safety technology with Axon

The Vancouver Police Department (VPD) is expanding its use of Axon technology to enhance situational awareness, improve coordination and help officers respond more effectively to incidents across the city.

As part of the deployment, VPD has become the first police agency in Canada to deploy Skydio X10 drones integrated with the Axon ecosystem. The drones will support officers with real-time aerial awareness, helping provide critical information during active incidents and improving operational decision-making.

VPD is also broadening the capabilities of its Axon Body cameras with Axon Assistant's Real-Time Translation feature, enabling officers to communicate in more than 50 languages during routine and time-sensitive interactions.

As Sgt. Dermot O'Boyle noted, "We want to be able to help everyone in our city, including those who may not be fluent in English. Being able to understand what they're telling us is a critical first step to getting them the help they need."

Together with live-streaming body-worn camera capabilities and the recent addition of Axon Fleet 3 in-car video systems equipped with automated license plate recognition (ALPR) cameras, these tools help provide officers and operations personnel with greater situational awareness and a more complete picture of unfolding events.

"Combined, these technologies create a system that helps improve decision-making, response times and overall public safety in Vancouver," said Supt. Kevin Bernardin.

"Public safety agencies are increasingly looking for ways to connect people, information and technology in real time," said Vishal Dhir, Senior Vice President of Commonwealth at Axon. "Vancouver Police Department's deployment demonstrates how an integrated ecosystem of body-worn cameras, drones and real-time operations technology can help provide greater situational awareness, improve coordination and support safer outcomes for both officers and the community."

Axon is proud to support the Vancouver Police Department as it continues to invest in connected technologies that help improve public safety while strengthening communication, coordination and transparency. VPD's deployment reflects a growing commitment among public safety agencies to responsibly leverage technology in support of both officers and the communities they serve.
