How Peel Regional Police modernised policing with the Axon Ecosystem

Like many fast-growing areas, Peel has faced increasing challenges with auto theft, home invasions, gun crime and homelessness. To address these evolving threats, Peel Regional Police needed connected technology that could streamline agency response and build community trust.

The Challenge

Peel is one of Canada’s fastest-growing regions. It includes two cities — Mississauga and Brampton — and one town, Caledon. As the area grew, Peel Regional Police needed scalable technology solutions to break down response silos, reduce clerical workloads and accelerate incident response. The agency was already using TASER energy devices. After learning more about the breadth of Axon’s public safety solutions, they chose to expand their investment in the Axon Ecosystem.

The solution

Peel Regional Police rolled out several connected solutions from Axon, including:

The results

Since expanding its investment in the Axon Ecosystem, Peel Regional Police feels more prepared to tackle the complex challenges of a growing region.

“We recently had an incident where there was a home invasion — the getaway vehicle was stolen,” explains Marc Andrews, Deputy Chief of Peel Regional Police. “That plate was on the hotlist for our ALPR. It triggered a response from one of our officers, who was subsequently able to stop the vehicle with support from the CSOC [Peel’s Real-Time Operations Centre] — all from an ALPR hit on a stolen vehicle in another jurisdiction, within 45 minutes of the incident happening.”

“For me, success...is already apparent,” continues Deputy Chief Andrews. “Our officers are seeing the impact on their workday that the increased efficiency brings.”

While connectivity is a core benefit of the Axon Ecosystem, Peel Regional Police has also seen individual technologies contribute to officer safety and confidence.

“We have the Fleet 3 in-car camera for when we're attending calls with traffic stops,” shares Constable Elizabeth Anaya. “I like to turn on the camera that faces outwards so that if anything happens during my routine traffic stop...it will be recorded.”

Draft One, for its part, has reduced the time officers spend writing reports by upwards of 50%.

With Draft One, officers are "able to not only complete their reports more quickly, but then they’re able to turn that time into the real policing duties," explains Deputy Chief Andrews.

Conclusion

Peel Regional Police has successfully used connected technology to improve response capabilities in their fast-growing community. But the agency believes there are still opportunities for improvement, especially when it comes to training.

The department plans to deploy Axon Training Pods, Axon’s new solution for flexible and consistent VR-based learning. According to Deputy Chief Andrews, these pods will “have a significant impact on our ability to train our officers.”

“We have a shared vision with Axon around public safety,” concludes Deputy Chief Andrews. With the Axon Ecosystem, Peel Regional Police is ready to bring that vision to life.
