Frequently Asked Questions about Axon AI

How does Axon ensure AI solutions are developed and used in a responsible, ethical way?
Axon follows our Responsible Innovation framework whenever we develop new technology. We recognize the immense promise of ethical AI innovation. Our mission is to harness cutting-edge AI technology to revolutionize community safety, all the while prioritizing the rigorous mitigation of biases and other potential risks. We build our AI-enabled technology with controls so that it never removes human decision-making in critical moments. Axon also rigorously tests our AI-enabled products to reduce inherent bias in the models before products are released. We are continually monitoring and improving any unforeseen instances of bias that may arise in the models and continue to seek external feedback from our Ethics and Equity Advisory Council and others when implementing AI.

What is the AI Era Plan?
The AI Era Plan gives law enforcement agencies access to Axon’s current and future AI solutions — all designed to improve productivity and support decision-making — for one fixed cost throughout the contract period. It represents a commitment to building AI-powered tools that are ethically developed, rigorously tested, and built with input from legal, law enforcement, and civil rights communities.

How is AI used in Axon products today?
AI is transforming a number of solutions across the Axon Ecosystem. Examples include Draft One, which helps officers quickly generate initial police report drafts; Auto-Transcribe, which converts body-worn camera audio into searchable text; and Real-Time Translation, which supports multilingual interactions in the field. Each of these tools are designed to improve efficiency and decision-making, all while keeping humans-in-the-loop.

Are Axon’s AI tools used to make legal or charging decisions?
No. Axon’s AI solutions are assistive technologies that provide information or initial automation to support users—but they do not make independent decisions regarding legal outcomes, charges, or guilt. Final decisions and accountability remain with human professionals.

What safeguards are in place to prevent misuse or errors?
Axon AI tools are subject to rigorous internal testing, third-party audits, and continuous monitoring. We incorporate feedback from legal experts and provide users with documentation outlining the system’s capabilities, limitations, and intended uses. We design our software with specific safeguards that help ensure humans review information and take ownership of decisions.

How does Axon help maintain the forensic integrity of evidence?
All digital evidence is traceable, explainable, and auditable. Axon does not use AI to "enhance" or alter video evidence. AI Summaries of evidence are always subject to human review, and tied to the original piece of evidence to streamline validation. Attorneys can review and challenge outputs like any other piece of evidence.

How are privacy and civil liberties protected?
Axon follows strict data governance policies and complies with applicable privacy laws. We design AI tools to minimize unnecessary data retention, avoid bias, and maintain the confidentiality of sensitive information. Agency data is securely housed within Axon Evidence and remains under the Agency’s control and ownership.

As part of our Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) certification, Axon and our development partners including Microsoft and OpenAI are strictly prohibited from sharing or using such content for AI training.

We prioritize ongoing development of our products without the use of customer data wherever possible. If we need to test with real customer data, we request permission to enroll customers in our voluntary, privacy-centric program — all while working within the confines of our data sharing agreement.
