Attribute search

Attribute search lets you use natural language to find people in body-worn camera videos based on what they are wearing or carrying. Search for clothing or accessories—such as “red backpack”—and jump directly to relevant moments.

Attribute search works across evidence and helps you narrow results to people of interest.

Access to attribute search depends on your organization's plan:

  • Attribute search requires Unlimited Smart Detection, which is included with the AI Era plan and runs automatically on supported Axon Body 3 and Axon Body 4 videos as they are uploaded.
  • You must have the Start and View Smart Detection permission to use attribute search.
  • Attribute search respects existing evidence access permissions. You can only search evidence you are allowed to access (for example, your own unrestricted evidence).

How it works

When you use attribute search, Axon Evidence finds people captured in body-worn camera video that best match your description and ranks results by relevance.

You do not need to include color in your search, but adding color details can help narrow results. Clearer descriptions and more visible clothing or accessory items are more likely to appear higher in the results list. If an item is small, distant, or pixelated )for example, jewelry), it might not be searchable.

Examples:

  • Jacket
  • Backpack
  • Red jacket
  • Black backpack
  • Green pants
  • Baseball cap

All searches require a search reason. Both the search query and search reason are logged in the user audit trail.

Note

Only objective clothing and accessory attributes are searchable. Demographic traits, personal characteristics, or identifying features are not searchable.

Tips for best results

Results depend on video quality, lighting, distance from the camera, and how clearly a person is visible.

  • Use clear descriptions of clothing or accessories.
  • Start with simple terms, then refine if needed.
  • Combine searches with filters such as date, owner, or case ID to reduce results.

Use attribute search

  1. Select Evidence.
  2. Select AI search.
Evidence search page with AI search highlighted.
  3. Enter a description of what the person is wearing or carrying.
    Example: red backpack
  4. Enter a Search reason (required). Use filters to narrow your results, if needed.
  5. Results are displayed in a gallery view, select a thumbnail to open the evidence in the evidence details page with the detected person highlighted in the side panel.

When you open a result, the video playhead moves to the timestamp where the person appears.
