Server updater

This article describes Axon Server Updater, which automates updates for your Axon Interview software on both servers and clients.

This video explains how to update Interview Room software.

Information

Axon Server Updater downloads the latest version of Axon Interview from Axon Evidence. When you select Update Servers, it uninstalls the old version of the Axon Interview from your servers and then installs the latest version. Axon Interview will be unavailable for a short time during the update.

All Interview clients automatically download the latest software from Axon Interview servers using the Axon Update Agent. No configuration changes are necessary and all previous settings on your system are retained.

Obtain Axon Server Updater from CSM/sales rep or contact Axon support.

Prerequisites

  • Windows operating system
    Servers should be on Windows Server 2016 or higher
    Clients should be on Windows 10 or higher

  • Interview software
    Your Interview needs to be on version 4.01 or newer. Check current version by opening the client software and noting the version number at the bottom. If your software is on version 3.x or lower, which was generally installed in 2020 or earlier, instead Schedule an update with Axon.

  • API v2
    Your Interview must be using API version 2. Determine API by signing into Axon Evidence and selecting Admin and then under Security Settings, select API settings.
    Check for an API with Interview in the client name. The API permissions for this API should include permission interview_room.marker.any.

  • Axon Server Updater software
    The Axon Server Updater software must be installed on one of your Interview servers. The shortcut should be on the server’s desktop.

  • Axon Update Agent
    The Axon Update Agent must be installed on your Interview clients. To verify this, open “windows services” on a client system and search for Axon Update Agent.

Schedule a maintenance period

Updating the Interview software via the Server Updater will take the system offline. On an optimal network, the entire update should take about 30 minutes, however, we recommend scheduling a 2-hour maintenance period within your agency to ensure that plenty of time for this update is allowed.

Run Server Updater

Axon Server Updater will automatically update first the Interview server software and then the software on clients. Before updating, ensure Interview is not currently in use.

  1. Connect to your primary Interview server
    Sign into Windows on the server. If you cannot find the server IPs, refer to your customer spreadsheet. Or, open Axon Interview Client Config on any Interview system and note the listed IP addresses.
  2. Open Axon Server Updater
    Double-click the Axon Server Updater shortcut.
  3. Update the servers
    Once the download completes, Server Updater lists all connected servers. It displays the current software version and latest available version.
    Important: Updating servers will take servers offline for up to 30 minutes. This displays in the Status column.
    Select Update Servers to start.
    Server Updater uninstalls and reinstalls required software in the background. Once a server updates, its Status changes from Offline to Up To Date.
    The update is complete when all servers have status Up To Date.
    Close Server Updater; Interview will now come back online.
  4. Update client systems
    If Axon Update is running on client systems, they will update themselves automatically as soon as they connect to updated servers.
    After the update, verify client software version at the bottom of the Interview client.
  5. Test the Interview system
    1. Open Interview on a client system.
    2. Sign in, choose a room, and start a new recording.
    3. Finish the recording and enter any required post-recording metadata.
    4. On the Interview Summary screen, verify that the Status is Successful.
    5. Sign into Axon Evidence and verify that the recording was uploaded and includes both video and audio.

Enable log uploading on Interview servers (optional)

  1. Connect to your server(s) and sign into the client.
  2. Select Admin Config and enter the admin password.
  3. On External, enable Log Upload Settings.
  4. Save and let the Interview service restart.

Group your servers (optional)

  1. Select Create a Group.
  2. Use the Add a Server dropdown to select servers to group.

Troubleshooting

Server Updater isn't downloading the latest software version

  1. Select Settings.
  2. Ensure your Axon Evidence domain is listed correctly and select Apply. Use your own agency domain.

Not all servers in your environment are listed

  1. Select Add a Server.
  2. Enter the Server Name, IP Address, and Port number.
  3. Select Apply. Add as many servers as you need.

Update fails due to server antivirus protections

Create the following exclusions in your antivirus software:

  • c:\Axon Interview
  • c:\Program Files (x86)\Axon Enterprise
  • c:\Program Files (x86)\Wowza Media Systems
  • c:\ProgramData\Axis Communications
  • c:\ProgramData\Axon Buffer Extractor
  • c:\ProgramData\Axon Interview Client
  • c:\ProgramData\Axon Live Streaming
  • d:\Axon Interview
  • c:\ProgramData\Axon Server Updater
