Axon Battery Information

Introduction

Rechargeable Lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery technology is commonly used in rechargeable applications such as mobile phones, laptops, and tablets. A variation of this technology, Lithium-ion-Polymer (LiPo), is used in some Axon products.

LiPo batteries in Axon Body Worn Cameras have high energy density which provides long usage time in compact dimensions. Axon products are designed to optimize the way LiPo batteries are utilized to maximize life and enhance safety.

Battery Protection

LiPo rechargeable batteries require a battery charging circuit and a protection circuit. Axon engineers have selected charging and protection parameters to provide maximum use between charges while maintaining maximum life-cycle.

Battery charging and safety monitoring circuits ensure discharge and charge parameters are not exceeded under any operating condition.

  • Battery charge and discharge current is monitored and limited.
  • Battery charge and discharge voltage is monitored and limited.
  • Battery temperature is monitored and protected from operation outside rated temperature.

Battery Extended Storage Considerations

  • LiPo batteries should be transported at approximately 30% State of Charge (SOC).
  • Consult IATA and USDOT regulations for battery transportation requirements.
  • LiPo batteries should be stored at approximately 40–50% SOC.
  • If a device will not be used for longer than 21 days, charge the battery to 40–50%, turn the device off, and remove the charging source.
  • Recharge the battery every three months to 40–50% to prevent battery damage.
  • Storage time, temperature, and SOC during storage affect battery life-cycle.
  • Batteries stored at high temperatures under high SOC may experience accelerated reduction in cycle life.
  • Best storage conditions: 41°F to 80°F (5°C to 27°C).
  • Storage temperature 45–60°C should be limited to less than 90 days.
  • Storage temperature above 60°C should be avoided.
  • Avoid storing batteries in damp environments.
  • Extended storage at elevated temperatures and SOC increases the risk of battery swelling. Swollen batteries must be replaced and properly discarded.

Battery Life-Cycle

Battery capacity decreases gradually with use (charging and discharging cycles). Once capacity drops below approximately 70% of rated capacity, the battery is considered to have reached end of useful life.

Degradation depends on the number of cycles and operating/storage temperature. Normal ambient temperature is 25°C / 77°F.

Typical LiPo battery life is between 300–500 cycles under normal usage conditions. End-of-life is typically 70–80% of rated capacity.

After prolonged use, some swelling may occur due to internal chemical processes. Swollen batteries should no longer be used and must be replaced promptly.

Care of Your Battery

  • Do not place device or battery near heat sources over 140°F (60°C).
  • Do not leave device or battery in direct sunlight or on a vehicle dashboard.
  • Do not charge battery products without adequate ventilation.
