Introduction

Overview

Axon Lightpost is a fixed-position automated license plate recognition (LPR) and live video streaming system that supports operational awareness and investigative workflows for law enforcement, public safety, and security partners. Axon Lightpostcontinuously monitors its field of view, performing edge-based license plate reader (LPR) processing and providing real-time livestreaming through Axon Fusus. All detections and video livestreams transmit securely over an always-on LTE connection, enabling situational visibility without requiring on-site network infrastructure.

Axon Lightpost is engineered for long-term outdoor deployment and can operate in a wide range of environmental conditions. Axon has partnered with Ubicquia, a leader in smart streetlights and smart grid solutions. Ubicquia has a smart Ubihub AI which provides compute, storage and LTE services. Axon Lightpost uses industry leader Axis Q1800 cameras for their superior capability to track vehicles and read license plates up at high speed and long distances. These devices are in sealed, weather-resistant housing that protects the optical and processing components, including the integrated LTE modem for persistent connectivity for both LPR detection uploads and livestreaming sessions. Manage camera and Axon Fusus device configuration and health monitoring through Axon Fusus.

A typical Axon Lightpost deployment consists of the device assembly mounted in a fixed position, powered by regulated AC power from a streetlight. Once installed and registered to Fusus, Axon Lightpost operates autonomously with minimal interaction, continually scanning for plates and remaining available for Axon Fusus-initiated livestream sessions.

Axon Lightpost has two core functional behaviors that operate concurrently:

  • Continuous LPR detectionAxon Lightpost captures plates within its field of view, processes them locally, and immediately uploads LPR metadata to Axon Fusus for rapid alerting, investigative support, and historical visibility.
  • Real-time livestreaming – Authorized Axon Fusus operators can initiate a video livestream from an Axon Lightpost camera through the existing LTE connection. Livestreaming provides on-demand visual situational awareness, especially valuable for perimeter monitoring, tactical deployments, or unattended surveillance. Note that Axon Lightpost’s field of view is narrow and is specifically configured for optimal plate capture. As with all Axon connected devices, Axon Lightpost uses encrypted communication protocols for secure transmission of all data

Axon Lightpost integrates seamlessly with existing Axon Fusus operations centers, real-time crime centers, and investigative workflows, providing users with a dependable, continuously connected field sensor without requiring routine interaction..

Intended use

Axon Lightpost is for organizations requiring continuous monitoring and real-time visibility within a defined area. It supports automated license plate recognition (ALPR) and remote live video access in environments where persistent situational awareness is needed.

Axon Lightpost cameras are for fixed-position deployment and continuous, unattended operation. All livestreaming and detection activity is managed through Axon Fusus, while device configuration, status monitoring, and firmware updates are handled through Axon Evidence.
