Stepping into the Bullring
Dec 04, 2023
Each year, 1.5 million people descend on Pamplona, Spain for the San Fermin Festival. The week-long festival features parades, sports, fireworks, and of course, the Running of the Bulls — a famed event where individuals of all ages run alongside six bulls as the animals make their way through public streets to the Pamplona Bullring.
How can an event of this magnitude remain secure, especially as more and more individuals attend the festivities? For Pamplona’s local police agency, la Policía Foral, a major advantage was already on their chests. With the help of Axon body cameras, la Policía Foral saw incidents of violence and misconduct against officers during this year’s festival drop by 50%.
Outfitted with Axon Body 3 cameras, officers immediately noticed that thepresence of body-worn cameras alone improved festival attendees’ behavior. “In complicated interventions, the other party sees that what happens is going to be recorded by the police,” explains Carlos Yarnoz, Chief Commissioner of the Citizen Attention Prevention Commission for the Navarra Police Force.
“When I see my agents go out with the cameras, I go home calmer because I know that whatever is going to happen (whether serious or not) will be recorded. Then we can do subsequent analyses that ensure that we always comply with what citizens demand of us,” said ChiefJuan Carlos Zapico of La Policía Foral de Navarra.
Chief Zapico’s sentiment gets to the root of what Axon body-worn cameras are all about. Axon products are designed to empower public safety professionals to do their jobs more effectively. Axon body-worn cameras provides an extra layer of security and awareness for both public safety agencies and citizens, meaning during and after events such as the San Fermin Festival, public safety professionals have the tools they need to keep their communities safe, and citizens can rest assured that this safety will not come at the expense of their privacy or peace of mind.
